What is a Z-type hybrid rooftop tent?

The short answer
A Z-type rooftop tent is a hybrid: a rigid hard shell lid over a fabric body that folds in a Z pattern, opened and closed by gas struts. Closed, it has the low aerodynamic profile of a roof cargo box; open, it gives you more floor area than the shell's footprint, the way a fold-out soft shell does. You pay for that in weight — Top Dog's two Z-types are 180 lb and 210 lb net against 119 lb for their simpler tents.
How the Z-fold works
Inside the shell, the tent body is folded in three panels arranged like the letter Z. When the gas struts lift the lid, those panels unfold in sequence — part of the tent rises with the lid, and part extends outward past the shell's footprint.
That's the trick: you get extra floor area without the full side-overhang of a traditional fold-out, and without giving up the rigid lid.

The double-layer construction
Both Z-types use two separate fabric layers rather than one. The outer rain layer is 450D at 200 GSM with a PVC coating; the inner body layer is 280 GSM polyester oxford, PU coated to 2000–3000 mm.
The point of splitting them is that the rain layer shields the body layer from UV, while the body layer stays breathable. On a tent that lives outdoors, UV is what kills fabric first.
Who it's for — and who it isn't
It's for someone who wants fold-out space but drives enough highway miles that a bulky closed profile actually costs them, and who has the roof capacity to spend.
It is not for someone tight on roof load. At 180 lb and 210 lb net, plus hardware and a rack, these need a structural platform rack or a bed rack on essentially every vehicle. If your budget is 150 lb, look at the Hard Top instead.

Is a hybrid rooftop tent better than a hard shell?

It's a different trade, not a strictly better one. A hybrid gives you more floor area than a pure hard shell of the same closed footprint, at the cost of significant extra weight — 180 to 210 lb versus 119 lb in Top Dog's range. If roof capacity is your constraint, the pure hard shell wins.
