Will this actually fit your vehicle?
Most rooftop tent sites show you a green tick and take your money. This one runs the four gates that actually decide it — how your rack attaches, how far apart your bars are, what your roof carries while driving, and what it carries with people asleep on it — and tells you which one you failed.
Fair warning: most people who run this tool find out their factory rack isn't enough. That's true of every rooftop tent brand, ours included. Better you learn it here than after a 130 lb crate arrives on a freight truck.
Most rooftop tent sites show you a green tick and take your money. This one runs the actual numbers — attachment type, bar spread, driving load and sleeping load — and tells you when the answer is no.
Measuring your crossbar spread

Find the centre of each crossbar
Look at your two crossbars from the side. You want the centre of the front bar and the centre of the rear bar, not the outside edges.

Measure front to back
Run a tape measure from the centre of the front bar to the centre of the rear bar, along the length of the vehicle. This is your crossbar spread.

Check it against the minimum
You need at least 32 inches and no more than 58 inches. If your bars are adjustable and you're short, move one — this is a bar problem, not a tent problem.

Identify how your rack attaches
Look at where the rack foot meets the roof: threaded fixed points, a slotted T-track, a rain gutter, a raised rail (with or without a gap under it), a flush rail, or a clamp that grips the door opening. The last one disqualifies the setup entirely.

A hard pass/fail, checked before any arithmetic. Clamp-on feet and unsupported raised rails are out — for every brand, not just ours.
Geometry
Bars at least 32 in apart and no more than 58 in, long enough for the tent's rails to land on both.
Dynamic load
Tent + hardware + rack + roof gear against what your roof carries while moving. We take the lower of the vehicle rating and the rack rating, and we de-rate for rough use.
Static load
Tent + rack + everyone sleeping in it against the parked rating. We never estimate a vehicle's static rating from its dynamic one — that shortcut is how roofs get damaged.
Fitment questions
Can my factory roof rack hold a rooftop tent?

Usually not. Factory roof racks are typically rated between 110 and 176 lb dynamic — the weight allowed while the vehicle is moving — and that figure already includes the weight of the rack itself. The lightest Top Dog tent is 119 lb net, and once you add roughly 12 lb of mounting hardware and 20 lb of crossbars you are at about 151 lb. Of the 29 vehicles in our dataset, only the Land Rover Defender at 370 lb has real headroom on the factory rack.
What is the difference between dynamic and static roof load?

Dynamic load is the maximum weight your roof may carry while driving. It exists to limit handling degradation from a raised centre of gravity and to survive braking, cornering and bump loads. Static load is the maximum when parked, and it is typically three to seven times higher. Both must pass: the tent has to clear the dynamic limit to be driven anywhere, and the tent plus the people sleeping in it has to clear the static limit.
Can I put a rooftop tent on clamp-on or door-jamb crossbars?

No. Clamp and door-jamb feet grip the door opening rather than the roof's structure, and Thule explicitly excludes them from rooftop tent use because the sustained load of an occupied tent can damage the rack and the vehicle. This applies to every rooftop tent on the market, not just ours. You need a rack that mounts to fixed points, factory tracks, rain gutters or supported raised rails.
How far apart do my crossbars need to be for a rooftop tent?

At least 32 inches centre to centre, front to back, and no more than 58 inches. Below 32 in the load concentrates on too short a span. This catches a lot of people on a factory Subaru Outback, where the swivel crossbars sit around 30 inches apart straight from the dealer.
Does an aftermarket rack raise my vehicle's roof capacity?

It raises the capacity of the rack, not the certification of the roof. A structural platform rack from Prinsu, Front Runner or Rhino-Rack mounts to fixed points or the roof's internal structure and bypasses the weak factory rails that are usually what the low OEM number is really rating. But the vehicle manufacturer never tested that configuration, and rack makers say so themselves. We show you both numbers and take the lower one.
Does the ladder carry some of the weight?

A little — around 5% by some estimates — but no tent or rack manufacturer permits you to count it, so our calculator does not. Treat the full tent weight plus occupants as load on the roof.
