How long a rooftop tent actually takes to set up

The short answer
A gas-strut hard shell rooftop tent opens in well under a minute — Top Dog publishes 60 seconds for the Aluminum POP Top and 90 seconds to pack it down. A fold-out soft shell realistically takes two to four minutes to open and longer to close, because the canvas has to be tucked in as the tent folds. Pack-down is the number that matters more: it's the harder half, it happens when you're tired, and it's what people actually complain about after a season.
What Top Dog publishes
The Aluminum POP Top (TD-03) is the only model with a manufacturer-published time: 60 seconds up, 90 seconds down, using semi-automatic hydraulic rods.
For the other models Top Dog doesn't publish a figure, and we're not going to invent one. What we can tell you is the mechanism, because that's what determines the time.

Why pack-down is the real number
Opening a tent is easy in any design — gravity and gas struts help you. Closing one means getting fabric to go where it should while a lid comes down on it.
That's why the wedge tents include an elastic fabric band that automatically pulls the canvas inward as you close them, and why the Soft Top ships with a 1000 GSM PVC cover that has to be wrestled back over everything. If you've ever spent five minutes walking around a vehicle poking canvas out of a closing seam, you know which half of the process to ask about.
What slows it down in the real world
Wind is the big one — a fold-out soft shell in gusts is a two-person job. Cold stiffens canvas and makes it bulkier to tuck. And if you peg out the awning poles over the windows, add a minute or two on each end.
Rain changes the order of operations rather than the time: you want the rainfly deployed before anything else is open.
Does it matter to you?
It depends entirely on your trip shape. Drive to one spot and stay four nights, and a two-minute difference is irrelevant. Move campsite every night on a week-long route, and you'll do it fourteen times — at which point the hard shell has paid for a chunk of its premium in daylight alone.
